Pre-sale lunch at Christie's with special guests Richard and Mimi Avery.

We start with the Domaine Morey-Coffinet Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru Les Pucelles 2005. Deep gold. Medium intense nose of citrus and minerals. The medium bodied palate shows a balanced high acidity and medium + intense citrus fruit with honeysuckle and green apple. Long finish. A lovely Pucelles.

Chateau Cheval Blanc 1971. Mature ruby colour with garnet rim. Beautiful intense and rich nose of red berries, cedar wood, cigar box. Medium body. The palate ois balanced with medium acidity, ripe and integrated medium tannins and ripe blackcurrant fruit, truffle and herbs. Excellent concentration and a very long finish. An elegant mature St Emilion from an underrated vintage.

Averys of Bristol Cuvee Hugues de Chanceaux 1969. A special bottling of (excess) Grands Echezeaux (of which the name is an anagram) by Averys, A rich and spicy wine with minerality and a long finish. Lovely.

Heitz Cellar Bella Oaks Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1976. The first vintage produced by Heitz from the Bella Oaks Vineyard in Rutherford. Medium ruby colour. Medium + intense, mature nose of ripe black and red cherry fruit, liquorice, mint and eucalyptus. On the palate this is rich and full bodied with a medium + acidity, ripe fruit, chocolate notes, chewy tannins and a long finish.

Final wine of the lunch is the Averys of Bristol Special Reserve Vintage Port 1963. The experts at the table believe this to be a blend of 60% Sandeman, 35% Taylor and a splash of Fonseca. Medium ruby with tawny rim. Medium nose of coffee, tea, plums, raisins and cherry. Well structured but lean on the palate with medium acidity and delicate fruit, coffee and peppery spice. Crispy long finish. A delightful vintage port.
