Dinner organised by Dr Wine at the legendary Bocuse restaurant in Lyon with Jean Claude Ramonet, wine magician and man of the soil (no ties allowed!). We start with his Puligny Montrachet Les Enseignieres 2012. Medium yellow with green highlights. Medium + intense nose with citrus and floral notes. The palate is dry, medium bodied with a medium + acidity, citrus and white fruit, some pain grille. A balanced and pure wine.

We move on to a premier cru from the same appellation, Puligny Montrachet Champ Canet 2008. Medium gold. Pronounced nose with rich, sweetish yellow fruit, melon and apricot. Medium+ body with high acidity and intense citrus fruit and minerals on the palate. Very long finish. A very well balanced and flavourful wine.

A surprise red is thrown in, the Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot 2005. Pale ruby. Medium + intense nose of pure cherry fruit. Medium body with medium + acidity, firm but supple tannins and fresh cherry fruit. Medium finish. A delectable, fresh and silky wine.

From the brown limestone soil with clay at the bottom of the slope comes his Batard Montrachet 2005. Refinement and power go had in hand. Medium gold. Ripe, rich buttery nose. Voluptuous. Full bodied, dry wine with medium + acidity, pure and intense citrus fruit with buttery notes, minerals and gently oaked (vanilla sugar). Very long finish. A delicious, rounded and powerful wine.

Purchased by Pierre Ramonet in 1978, their hallowed plot of Montrachet remains for me the benchmark of this appellation, maybe not the greatest, not the richest and not the most expensive one, but always a superb 'grand vin'. We drank Montrachet 2002 from jeroboam (300 cl). Pale but bright gold colour. Beautiful, complex nose with citrus, minerals, white fruit and floral hints. Finely delineated, medium + acidity, full bodied with intense citrus fruit and feather-light at the same time. Very concentrated, dense and very, very long. A complex, intense and brilliant wine.
