Lunch with Steven at 67 Pall Mall. We started with Weingut Robert Weil, Kiedrich Graefenberg Riesling Grosses Gewaechs 2012. A Rheingau masterpiece by fourth generation winemaker William Weil from its vertiginous, stony slopes (60% inclination). Pale gold. Aromatic nose with medium + intense aromas of apple and citrus, apricots and some exotic notes of pineapple and guava. Dry (although some may say slightly off dry) palate, which is balanced with a fresh medium + acidity, medium body and flavours of citrus and lemon curd. Earthy and floral notes lead to a long finish. A very good complex and mineral wine.
The highlight of the lunch was Chateau Haut Brion Blanc 1989. Only 8000 bottles are produced from vineyards that are planted with 63% Semillon and 37% Sauvignon Blanc which confer respectively its body and aromas of white flowers to this delicious wine. Medium gold. A medium intense nose of citrus, peach and white flowers. On the palate, dry, medium bodied with a firm medium acidity and honeyed fruit, white peach and a smooth polished feel to it. Very long finish. An outstanding wine with perfect balance and poise.
We finished with a glass of a delectable St Emilion, Chateau Troplong Mondot 2001. Medium ruby colour. Classic and elegant Bordeaux nose from right bank with vivid black fruit (cherries and plums), blackcurrant and liquorice. The palate shows round, well integrated tannins, medium acidity and fresh, earthy flavours. Medium + finish. A balanced, fruity wine with very good concentration.
